The Fly

The Fly is an American science fiction horror film released in 1986.

It is based on the 1957 short story with the same name by George Langelaan. The score was produced by Howard Shore, who would later become famous for his works in Lord of the Rings.

The Movie

Seth Brundle (Goldblum) is a scientist working on a machine to teleport objects and ultimately living beings. His invention however succeeds in teleporting objects, but rips living things apart.

Veronica (Davis) works with him on the project and they develop a relationship. It was when they succeeded in teleporting a baboon successfully, that a intoxicated Seth decides to teleport himself.

Unaware of the fly that joined him in the capsule, Seth teleports himself to veronica’s capsule. It is from here that he observes himself mutating into a human/fly hybrid.

Conclusion

The Fly was released on 15 August 1986 with huge praise from critics. The movie earned a whopping $60 million at the box office, on a budget of $15 million. The film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Makeup. A sequel was released in 1989 named “The Fly II”
