Freddie Mercury
Early Life
Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara on 5 September 1946 on the island of Zanzibar. In 1964 his family fled to Middlesex, England following an uprising in Zanzibar. Here he studied and wrote music.
In 1970 he met guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Tayler and formed the rock band, Queen. Freddie Mercury was talented and was known for his four-octave range voice. Today he is regarded as one of the greatest lead singers in rock history. In 1971 John Deacon joined Queen as the bass guitarist.
Mercury decided to call the band “Queen”, despite the reservations of the other band members and then studio, Trident Studios. He persisted and designed the band’s logo shortly before the first album’s release.

Vocals
Mercury’s vocal talent was rare. He could sing in a range from bass low to soprano high. Montserrat Caballe said
“His technique was astonishing. No problem of tempo, he sang with an incisive sense of rhythm, his vocal placement was very good and he was able to glide effortlessly from a register to another. He also had a great musicality. His phrasing was subtle, delicate and sweet, or energetic and slamming. He was able to find the right coloring or expressive nuance for each word.”
