Early Life and Career
Belinda Jo Carlisle was born on August 17, 1958, in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in a musical family, with her father being a jazz musician and her mother a housewife. Carlisle’s parents divorced when she was young, and she went on to attend Newbury Park High School in California.
In the late 1970s, Carlisle joined the punk rock band The Germs as their drummer under the pseudonym Dottie Danger. However, she soon left the band and went on to join the all-female rock band The Go-Go’s, which became a huge success in the 1980s.
The Go-Go’s

The Go-Go’s were formed in 1978, and Carlisle joined the band in 1979 as their lead singer. The band’s sound was a mix of punk and new wave, and they quickly gained a loyal following in the Los Angeles punk scene. In 1981, they released their debut album, “Beauty and the Beat,” which became a massive commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
The album featured hits like “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed,” both of which were co-written by Carlisle. The band’s success continued with their second album, “Vacation,” which was released in 1982 and featured the hit title track. The album reached number eight on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 1984, The Go-Go’s released their third album, “Talk Show,” which featured the hit single “Head Over Heels.” However, tensions within the band began to rise, and in 1985, the band announced their breakup. The Go-Go’s reunited for a tour in 1990 and released two more albums in the 21st century.
Solo Career

After The Go-Go’s disbanded, Carlisle went on to pursue a solo career. In 1986, she released her debut solo album, “Belinda,” which featured the hit single “Mad About You.” The album was a commercial success, reaching number 13 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Carlisle’s second solo album, “Heaven on Earth,” was released in 1987 and became her most successful album to date. The album featured the hit singles “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” and “Circle in the Sand,” both of which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Heaven on Earth” reached number three on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified triple platinum.

In 1989, Carlisle released her third solo album, “Runaway Horses,” which featured the hit singles “Leave a Light On” and “Summer Rain.” The album reached number 37 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold.

In 1991, Carlisle released her fourth solo album, “Live Your Life Be Free,” which featured the title track as the lead single. The album was a commercial disappointment, failing to chart in the US and only reaching number 16 in the UK.
