The gifted students of Millard Fillmore High


The TV show

Head of the class’ aired from 1986 to 1991on ABC. The show is mainly set in the classroom of the academically gifted students at Fillmore High. A fictional school, with the footage of the outer buildings from Washington Irving High School. Howard Hesseman, known for his role as the radio DJ Dr. Johnny Fever in ‘WKRP in Cincinnati’, plays the role of a history teacher named Charlie Moore.

In the opening scenes, Charlie is on his way to school. He passes a couple of New York landmarks, as he navigates the streets, and arrives at the school. Here Charlie fills in as a substitute teacher.
