The Album

ELO (Time) is the ninth studio album from the English Rock Band. It was released in July 1980 and tells the story of a man from 1980 traveling through time to 2095. Being a concept album, it gained popularity amongst retrofuturistic fans. A blend of synthesizer and rock, the album was groundbreaking.

It spent two weeks on top of the UK Album Charts, featuring one of the best prologues to this day—simply an outstanding production.

Deborah Frost of Rolling Stone magazine wrote:

 “superfluous … thematic conceit”

“If ELO’s not careful, they’re going to end up becoming the kind of cheese that squirts out of an aerosol can.”

Twilight With Prologue

Lyrics

The visions dancing in my mind
The early dawn, the shades of time
Twilight crawling through my windowpane

Am I awake or do I dream?
The strangest pictures I have seen
Night is day and twilight’s gone away

With your head held high and your scarlet lies
You came down to me from the open skies
It’s either real or it’s a dream
There’s nothing that is in between

Twilight
I only meant to stay a while
Twilight
I gave you time to steal my mind away from me

Across the night, I saw your face (time)
You disappeared without a trace (time)
You brought me here, but can you take me back?

Inside the image of your light (time)
That now is day and once was night (time)
You leave me here and then you go away

(It’s either real or it’s a dream
There’s nothing that is in between)
Twilight (twilight)
Twilight (twilight)
Twilight (twilight)
I gave you time to steal my mind away from me

You brought me here, but can you take me back again?

With your head held high and your scarlet lies
You came down to me from the open skies
(It’s either real or it’s a dream
There’s nothing that is in between)

Twilight
I only meant to stay awhile (twilight)
Twilight
I gave you time to steal my mind

Twilight
I only meant to stay awhile (twilight)
Twilight
I only meant to stay awhile (twilight)

Twilight (twilight)
Twilight (twilight)
