Tom and Jerry

Who does not know this duo? The endless cat and mouse fights, bringing laughter to kids and adults alike. Tom and Jerry, however, was serious business for William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the creators in 1940. It aired until 1958 when MGM cartoon studios closed the previous year.

The pair won 7 Oscar awards for Best Animated Short Subject. Gene Deitch directed 13 revived short films from 1961 to 1962. Between 1963 and 1967 Chuck Jones, responsible for Looney Tunes, produced another 34 shorts. In 1975 Barbara and Hannah returned with their own show, But things were much different then, with violence being toned down in kids shows. They produced 48 7 minute shows until 1977.

Come the 80’s however the show was in the hands of Filmation. Titled the Tom and Jerry Comedy Show, it now added more characters, starring Droopy, Spike, Stick Wolf, and Barney Bear. The show became an ever-present feature on TV screens all around the world.

Saturday mornings would never be the same without the show on T.V. as most kids from the 80’s would agree.
