Mattel Electronics Intellivision
The Intellivision was released by Mattel Electronics in 1979. Intellivision is a portmanteau of “intelligent television”.
It was launched in the same year as the Atari 2600.

The development of the entertainment system started as early as 1977. Between 1980 and 1983 more than 3 million units were sold. In 1984 Mattel sold the video game assets to a former employee. Later to become INTV Corporation. Development of the game cartridges went on from 1978 to 1990 when the system was discontinued. Although not the only competitor to Warner Communication’s Atari system, it was the only console that posed a serious threat to the market leader.
Inside the console was a GI-AY-3-8914 soundcard, and 1k RAM/6k ROM of memory. In the US it retailed at $275.
The company took Atari head-on with a whole series of tv commercials comparing the two devices. Intellivision’s graphics were superior as can be seen in the video below.
Various companies branded and distributed the gaming console. the Sears Super Video Arcade was produced in Hong Kong, while Radio Schack marketed it as the Tandyvision One.
