The 1980s Banana Clip Is Back!

The fashions of the 1980s were arguably the most colorful and daring of all the decades preceding it. Everything was funky and trendy, and you just need to be reminded of the hairstyles and countless cans of hairspray and don’t forget the fashion. Over the years many styles and frenzies made their comeback from the 80s. One of these is the 1980s banana clip.

Since around 2018, the useful hair accessory appeared again and gradually gained popularity, peaking during the latter part of 2020. The banana clip is back! Even People magazine took to Twitter to write about it.
You can remember the effortless use of this nifty invention. Had too little time in the morning? Wanted to skip shampoo day? Then this clip was ideal to quickly pull hair up into ponytails or loose updos. Widely seen as a precursor to the tortoiseshell claw clip, butterfly clips, and neon scrunchies.
The 80s have always been an inspiration for fashion trends. The lively bright and neon colors of the decade will never be forgotten, reminding us of the free youth of that era.

This ingenious accessory was shaped like a banana, with two plastic sides, attached to one end. Both sides had plastic teeth facing each other. The other end was loose with a clip, so you could open the sides from each other, insert the hair, and close the two sides around the hair, with the plastic teeth being inserted into the hair. The open end then was clipped into position. The whole procedure would just take a few seconds.

Although many do not share the excitement citing that the plastic teeth are too weak to hold thick hair properly, and the hinges actually break your hair. Regardless, the iconic 80s hairclip has made its return, and various new uses and designs have started to emerge.
